The Premier Site for Russian Culture
On 6 February 1920, Kazimir Malevich and the students of the Vitebsk School of Art restaged Victory Over the Sun. Mounted at the Latvian Club, the opera opened the “Front Week” organised by the local authorities to raise money for the Red Army. Unlike at the premiere of Victory Over the Sun in St Petersburg in December 1913, the music of Mikhail Matiushin was not performed in Vitebsk. The costumes for this production were designed by Vera Yermolaeva in 1920. El Lissitzky created figurines for the opera in 1923, while Kazimir Malevich made further costume designs in the second half of the 1920s.
