Elena Glinska was the daughter of Prince Wasyl Glinski of Lithuania and Princess Ana Jakši? of Serbia. The Glinski family moved from Poland to Muscovy in 1507, where Elena was born circa 1508. In 1526, Elena married Grand Prince Basil III, following the enforced tonsure of his first wife, Solomonia Saburova. After the death of Basil III in 1533, Elena ruled Russia as regent for five years during the minority of her eldest son, Ivan the Terrible. She died in Moscow on 4 April 1538 and was buried in the Convent of the Ascension in the Moscow Kremlin. Reburied in the Archangel Cathedral in 1929.
