Grand Duchess Elizaveta Mikhailovna was the second child and second daughter of Grand Duke Mikhail Pavlovich and Grand Duchess Elena Pavlovna. She was born in the Moscow Kremlin on 26 May 1826 and named after the late Empress Elizabeth Alexeyevna. She married Duke Adolph of Nassau in St Petersburg on 31 January 1844 and took up residence at Schloss Biebrich in Wiesbaden. On 28 January 1845, Elizaveta died giving birth to a daughter, who died the following day. She was buried at the Bonifatiuskirche in Wiesbaden (1845) and reburied at the Russisch-Orthodoxe Kirche der heiligen Elisabeth (1855), which was specially built for this purpose on Neroberg (1847–55).
