Painter, graphic artist, teacher. Born in the family of Vasily Uchayev in the village of Dzhermen in Khabarovsk Region (1939). Studied at Saratov School of Art (1959–64) and under Yevsei Moiseyenko at the Ilya Repin Institute of Painting, Sculpture and Architecture in Leningrad (1964–70). Member of the Union of Artists (1970). Chairman of the Saratov Union of Artists and the Volga section of the Russian Academy of Arts (1981–89). Honoured Artist of the RSFSR (1981), People’s Artist of the RSFSR (1988), winner of the Ilya Repin Prize (1984). Honorary citizen of Saratov (2000) and Saratov Region (2001). Awarded a gold medal by the Russian Academy of Arts (2003). Full member of the Russian Academy of Arts (2007). Contributed to exhibitions (from 1963), including Times of Change: Art in the Soviet Union (1960–85) at the Russian Museum in St Petersburg (2006).
