Painter, draughtsman, teacher. Studied under Alexander Stupin at the Arzamas School of Art and under Alexei Venetsianov in St Petersburg. Attended drawing classes at the Imperial Academy of Arts (1830–35). Awarded the title of free artist of portraiture and miniature painting (1839). Lived in the village of Manuilovka in the Ukraine (from mid-1830s) and taught drawing to the children of the landowner V. N. Ostrogradskaya in Poltava Province (late 1830s).
