The Premier Site for Russian Culture
The Grotto in the Summer Garden was based on a project by Andreas Schlüter, a German sculptor and architect invited to St Petersburg by Peter the Great (1714). After his death, construction was headed by Jean-Baptiste-Alexandre Le Blond, Georg Johann Mattarnovi, Nicola Michetti and Mikhail Zemtsov, who finished and decorated the interiors (1723–25). Expensive materials and works of art were bought or imported for the Grotto – multi-coloured marbles, shells, marble niches, masks and sculptures.
