In 1532, the Church of the Ascension was built in the royal village of Kolomenskoe, on the banks of the River Moscow. The church was built to celebrate the birth of the heir to the throne – the future Ivan the Terrible. More than sixty metres in height and 8½ by 8½ metres in size, the Church of the Ascension was designed as a symbol of Russian statehood.
