Ukrainian poet, artist. Born in the family of Hryhoriy Shevchenko and Kateryna Boiko in the Ukrainian village of Moryntsi (1814). Emancipated from serfdom with the help of Vasily Zhukovsky, Alexei Venetsianov and Karl Brullov (1838). Studied under Karl Brullov at the Imperial Academy of Arts (1838–45). Academician of engraving (1860). Imprisoned and exiled for belonging to the Brotherhood of St Cyril and St Methodius (1847–57). Took part in an expedition to explore the Aral Sea (1848–49). Died in St Petersburg (1861).
