Pyotr Zavadovsky came from Chernihiv Province. He was educated by Jesuits and at the Kiev Religious Academy. Zavadovsky had a handsome face and an easy disposition. He was only the the favourite of Catherine the Great for a short period of time, until Prince Grigory Potemkin intrigued against him and he fell from grace. Although removed from the court, he was awarded much land in Chernihiv and Mohilev provinces. He later became the director of the Noblemen’s Bank and the State Bank. Under Paul, he was made a count and awarded the Order of St Andrew. He served as minister of education under Tsar Alexander I.
