Old Russian artist. Born (circa 1440). Known as “the most celebrated of all” (1460s). Headed an association of artists which painted the icons and frescoes for the main Muscovite church, the Cathedral of the Dormition in the Kremlin, built by Aristotele Fioravanti. Fulfilled many commissions for monasteries, painting the frescos and iconostasis of the Cathedral of the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin in the St Therapontus Monastery with the help of his sons Vladimir and Theodosius (early 16th century). His oeuvre reflected the spiritual and artistic searches of the fifteenth century and dictated the main trends in the Russian painting of the second half of the fifteenth and early sixteenth centuries. Died (before 1508).
