Painter. Born in a lower middle-class family in Moscow. Studied at the Moscow School of Painting, Sculpture and Architecture and worked under Karl Brullov. Awarded the title of non-class artist (1842) and accepted into the Imperial Academy of Arts (1843). Academician of folk and domestic scene painting (1857). Worked in St Petersburg and Moscow, often visited his relatives in Saratov Province, where he studied the life of the peasantry.
