Estonian painter, graphic artist, applied artist, architect. Born in the family of a Baltic German dentist called Eduard Ludwig Hefftler and his wife Marie Louise Haase in the city of Reval (now Tallinn) in Estonia (1853). Studied engineering at the Institute of Civil Engineers in St Petersburg (1876–82) and architecture at the Imperial Academy of Arts (1876–84). Rebuilt the tenement block at the corner of 80 Griboyedov Canal Embankment and 5 Voznesensky (renamed Krasnogradsky in 1952) Lane in St Petersburg (1884). Married Emma Charlotte Mattly in Rakvere (1884), who gave birth to his son Andreas (later an artist) in Reval (1885). Worked as a goldsmith for Peter Carl Fabergé (late 1880s–early 1890s). Visited Nice (1894) and Venice (1896). Awarded the title of artist of landscape watercolour painting (1896). Member of the Society of Russian Watercolourists (1898). Died in Petrograd (1918) or possibly in Estonia (1920). Contributed to exhibitions (from 1888). Contributed to the exhibitions of the Society of Russian Watercolourists (1888–1918), Eesti Kirjanduse Selts in Reval (1897–1900), St Petersburg Society of Artists (1898–1917), Imperial Academy of Arts (1904–07, 1909–13, 1915–17), “War” Patriotic Exhibition of Pictures in Petrograd (1915), Fellowship of Artists (1916), Arkhip Kuinji Society (1918), Pan-Russian Exhibition of Industry and Agriculture in Nizhny Novgorod (1896) and St Petersburg: A Portrait of the City and its Citizens at the Russian Museum in St Petersburg (2003).
