German painter, graphic artist. Born in the city of Magdeburg in the semi-autonomous Duchy of Magdeburg in the Kingdom of Prussia (1779). Studied under Johann Hubert Anton Forst at the Berliner Porzellanmanufaktur (1796–1803). Worked in the Baltic provinces (1809–15) and St Petersburg (from 1816?). Painted a series of views of St Petersburg and environs. Returned to Berlin (1823). Court artist of King Friedrich Wilhelm II of Prussia (1825). Died in the town of Rheinsberg in the Kingdom of Prussia (1852). Contributed to exhibitions at the Königliche Akademie der Künste in Berlin (1800, 1804, 1830, 1840).
