Swedish painter, engraver. Born to the family of a customs scribe in Varberg (1748). Studied under S. Frick in Gothenburg, where he was a member of the Society of Painters. Lived and worked in Riga (1774–86) and St Petersburg (1787–1815), where he married Christina Tielmann (1791). Appointed official painter to the imperial court (1800). Painted portraits, genre scenes and ninety vedute of St Petersburg. Died in St Petersburg and buried at the Tenteleva Lutheran Cemetery (1815). Member of the Royal Swedish Academy of Arts in Stockholm (1798).
