German engraver, draughtsman, illustrator. Born in the city of Leipzig in the Electorate of Saxony (1770). Studied at the Kunstakademie in Dresden (from 1784). Lived in Russia (1790–98). Accompanied German traveller and botanist Peter Simon Pallas on his trip to the south of Russia and published his drawings in Pallas’s Neuen Reisen in die Sudlicher Staathalterschaften des Russischen Reichs (1799–1801). Illustrated children’s books and published series of engravings devoted to Russia in Leipzig. Died in the city of Leipzig in the Kingdom of Saxony (1844).
