Alexander von Bock

Born: 1829, Dorpat (now Tartu)
Died: 1895, St Petersburg

Sculptor, painter, draughtsman, teacher. Studied sculpture under Baron Peter Clodt von Jürgensburg at the Imperial Academy of Arts (1850–57). Awarded a major gold medal and the title of first-class artist (1857). Fellow of the Imperial Academy of Arts in Italy, Germany and France (1858–64). Professor (1864), first-class professor (1883). Taught at the Imperial Academy of Arts (1865–95). Sculpted statues of Baron Peter Clodt von Jürgensburg (1870), Timoleon Carl von Neff (1877) and Karl Ernst von Baer (1882) and a series of works on mythological subjects. Designed monuments to Prince Ivan Paskiewicz in Warsaw (1870) and Mikhail Glinka in Smolensk (1885).
