Ilya Glazunov

Painter, graphic artist, restorer, theatrical designer, teacher, writer on art and history. Born in the family of historian Sergei Glazunov and his wife Olga Flug in Leningrad (1930). Studied under Boris Johanson at the Leningrad Secondary School of Art (1944–49) and at the Ilya Repin Institute of Painting, Sculpture and Architecture in Leningrad (1951–57). Moved to Moscow (1957). Honoured Artist of the RSFSR (1973), People’s Artist of the RSFSR (1979), People’s Artist of the USSR (1980). Headed the studio of portraiture at the Vasily Surikov Institute of Art in Moscow (1980s). Founder and rector of the All-Russian Academy of Painting, Sculpture and Architecture (1987). Artistic director of the restoration of the Grand Kremlin Palace (1996–99). Full member of the Russian Academy of Sciences (2000). Died of heart failure in Moscow (2017). Contributed to exhibitions (from 1957).
