Natalia Abalakova

Born: 1941, Gorky (now Nizhny Novgorod)

Painter, graphic artist, installation artist, video artist, performance artist, translator. Born in the family of Boris Abalakov (1941) in the city of Gorky (renamed Nizhny Novgorod in 1990). Graduated from the Vladimir Lenin Pedagogical Institute in Moscow (1964). Collaborated with Anatoly Zhigalov (from early 1970s). Member of the Apt-Art movement and founder of the Moscow Archive of New Art. Lives in Moscow. Contributed to many apartment and other illegal exhibitions of nonconformist art (from 1974) and Adventures of the Black Square at the Russian Museum in St Petersburg (2007).
