Painter. Born in St Petersburg in the family of a civil servant called Ivan Sternberg (1818). Studied under Maxim Vorobyov at the Imperial Academy of Arts. Awarded a second-class silver medal (1836), minor gold medal for works painted from life in the Ukraine (1837) and a major gold medal for Blessing Easter Cakes in the Ukraine (1838), which was acquired by Tsar Nicholas I for his eldest daughter Grand Duchess Maria Nikolaevna. Awarded the title of artist (1839). Joined Count Vasily Perovsky’s expedition to Khiva in Uzbekistan (1839–40). Fellow of the Imperial Academy of Arts in Italy (1840–45). Died in Rome (1845).
