Pavel Chistyakov

Painter, teacher. Uncle of Varvara Baruzdina. Studied under Pyotr Basin and Maxim Vorobyov at the Imperial Academy of Arts (1849–61). Fellow of the Imperial Academy of Arts in Paris and Rome (1862–70), visited Germany and Austria. Academician (1870), adjunct professor (1872), full member of the Imperial Academy of Arts (1893). Taught at the School of Drawing of the Society for the Encouragement of Artists (1870–72) and the Imperial Academy of Arts (1872–92), where he headed the mosaic department (1890–1912) and his own studio (1908–10). Developed his own teaching method in opposition to the established academic system, contributing to the development of Realism in Russian art in the late nineteenth century. Married his student Vera Meyer (1848–1919), daughter of Yegor Meyer. Lived at his dacha in Tsarskoe Selo (1876–1919). Died in Detskoe Selo and buried at the Kazan Cemetery (1919).
