Courtier, collector, patron. Father of Count Pavel Stroganov, grandfather of Count Alexander Pavlovich Stroganov and Princess Elizaveta Saltykova. Born in Moscow in the family of Baron Sergei Stroganov and Princess Sofia Naryshkina (1733). Studied abroad (1752–57). Owned the Stroganov Palace (1756) and the Stroganov Dacha (1796). Count of the Holy Roman Empire (1761), chamberlain (1762), honorary member of the Imperial Academy of Arts (1768), privy councillor (1770), full privy councillor, senator (1775), marshal of nobility of St Petersburg Province (1784), lord high chamberlain (1796), director of the Imperial Public Library (1798), president of the Imperial Academy of Arts (1800), member of the State Senate (1801). Wrote memoirs of the foundation of the Imperial Academy of Arts. Compiled and published Catalogue raisonné des tableaux qui composent la collection du comte A. de Stroganoff (1793, 1800) and Collection d’estampes d’apre?s quelques tableaux de la galerie de son Exc. Mr. le comte A. Stroganoff, grave?es ou trait par des jeunes artistes de l’Acade?mie des beaux-arts a? St. Pe?tersbourg (1807). Died in St Petersburg and buried at the St Alexander Nevsky Monastery (1811).
