Auguste de Montferrand

French architect, draughtsman. Born in the village of Chaillot (now part of Paris) in France (1786). Served in Napoleon’s Grande Armée. Studied architecture in Paris. Moved to St Petersburg (1816). Court architect. Designed Prince Alexei Lobanov-Rostovsky’s mansion at 12 Admiralty Prospekt, Prince Demidov’s mansion at 43 Malaya Morskaya Street, Prince Gagarin Mansion at 45 Malaya Morskaya Street, his own mansion at 82 River Moika Embankment, architectural project for the monument to Tsar Nicholas I on St Isaac’s Square, Alexander Column on Palace Square, interiors of the Winter Palace after the fire (1837) and St Isaac’s Cathedral. Died in St Petersburg and buried at the Cimetière de Montmartre in Paris (1858).
